The largest tropical forest in the world
The Amazon is the same size as half of all other tropical forests on the planet combined.
It covers an area of 5.5 million square kilometers, which is equivalent to two Argentinas.
In Brazilian territory alone, for example, it represents 60% of the entire country’s area.
The Amazon River
Considered the second longest river on the planet with over 6,000 km. Therefore, the Amazon River is almost the same distance between the center of Brazil and the center of Mexico!
The fauna
The region’s fauna is fantastic, as it includes about three thousand known species of fish, 1,500 of birds, 427 of mammals, 400 of amphibians, 378 of reptiles, as well as over 100,000 invertebrates, such as insects.
The flora
The forest has more than 40,000 plant species, making it not as uniform as it may seem.
For example, the Amazon has flooded forests, riparian forests, and upland forests.
The locals: indigenous people, riverine dwellers, and caboclos
Inhabited by a simple, kind, yet knowledgeable people, the population of the Amazon is an attraction in itself.
When you meet them, they will probably welcome you with a meal of fish with cassava flour. In other words: guaranteed joy!
Deforestation and activism
A place as grand and special as this should be extremely valued.
Unfortunately, we do not always treat the region with the respect and care it deserves.
